However it seems to me that many high school athletes to not wish to do the squat exercise and I do not know what reason this is.

The toe raises will help you to strengthen the calf muscles which is in the lower legs the body. Think of the calf muscles as Springs, when you compress a spring, the more you compress it, then the more energy it will exert when the spring is released from compression. The same thing can be said for the calf muscles, the calf muscles act just like a spring does.
