Young South Africans call for jobs, end to poverty (AP)

JOHANNESBURG ? Young South Africans brought their frustration over poverty and joblessness to the streets Thursday, responding to a call by the tough-talking youth leader of the governing African National Congress who has clashed with older party leaders over economic policy.

"Shoot the boer!" the crowd of thousands sang, a black liberation war-era chant that South Africa's highest court has ruled is racist and that the ANC ordered youth leader Julius Malema and his followers to stop singing. "Boer," farmer in the language of Dutch-descended South Africans, is sometimes used for all whites.

Malema led the crowd in chants of "Down with white monopoly capital!" as they approached the Chamber of Mines headquarters. Malema has been demanding nationalization of the country's lucrative mines, though the ANC-led government has said it has no intention to do so.

A banner at the mining headquarters declared "We agree with you that unemployment is too high, poverty is too high, inequality is too high."

Police and ANC Youth League marshals kept a close watch as the crowd of about 5,000 marched in 80-degree (27-degree Celsius) heat with dance music blaring from speakers.

Protester Tsholofelo Stephina Bester said the ANC must act faster to help the poor. Bester said that when she graduated from high school 10 years ago, she couldn't afford further studies to pursue her dream of becoming a social worker. She has been looking for steady work since. For the last two years, she has volunteered as an AIDS counselor, earning "pocket money" of 1,500 rand (about $190) a month. She and her 7-year-old daughter get by on that and welfare assistance.

"I want them not to promise without delivering," she said of ANC leaders. "I want them to deliver."

A quarter of the South African work force was unemployed even before the worldwide slowdown led to hundreds of thousands of lost jobs here. Unemployment among young people is even higher than the national average.

Malema took the lead in the "economic freedom march" that will go to the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, then on foot and by bus about 40 miles (60 kilometers) north to Pretoria, the seat of government. After an overnight vigil in a Pretoria sports stadium, Malema will present government officials with his demands, which include jobs, housing and other help for the poor, and nationalizing the mines.

ANC leaders say talk about nationalizing mines undermines investor confidence, while Malema calls them "cowards," accusing them of being afraid to take on powerful mine bosses. Malema also says whites remain privileged 17 years after the end of apartheid, and that big business largely remains in white hands.

Thursday's protest may be aimed as much at influencing ANC economic policy as showing older leaders Malema cannot be ignored. Next year, President Jacob Zuma faces an internal party leadership vote that could also determine who will be South Africa's next president. Malema helped put Zuma in power after turning against predecessor Thabo Mbeki.

The main ANC grudgingly accepted Malema's plans to march after asking Malema to tone down his anti-government rhetoric. He also pledged the march would be peaceful.

In August, pro-Malema demonstrators burned ANC flags and ran through the streets of downtown Johannesburg holding up flaming T-shirts bearing the image of President Zuma. That protest was sparked by the start of a disciplinary hearing for Malema and five other youth league officers accused of bringing the ANC into disrepute with calls for the ouster of the democratic government of neighboring Botswana. They face expulsion or suspension from the party in a process that has not yet concluded.

In a speech to parliament earlier this week, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan said creating jobs, reducing poverty, building infrastructure and expanding the economy would be the work of many decades. In what many analysts said was a veiled reference to Malema's calls for nationalization, Gordhan said South Africa's mining industry, a key sector of the country's economy, had not benefited from a global boom in mineral prices, in part because of "uncertainty in the regulatory environment."

"Anger is not enough," Gordhan said. "We have to act, we have to be bold and farsighted in our resolve to move ahead with the reforms that will build a better future not just for ourselves but for generations to come."

BMW presents car-to-x communication, wants vehicles to talk more (video)

What good is an Ultimate Driving Machine if it can't get a little help from its friends? A new hazard-dodging system from BMW could help these Bavarian autos get a bit more chatty, each vehicle talking to nearby traffic across long-range wireless networks. In a series of video demonstrations, the car maker shows how the car-to-x system could give advance warnings of traffic, emergency vehicles and weather hazards by enabling one car to beam warnings directly to others. BMW hopes to connect the system to mobile phone networks as latency times improve and possibly even access data from traffic light systems. Sure, GM and Ford got there a bit earlier, but you can see BMW's implementation demonstrated after the break, and check out the via link for more videos of the world's most boring game of GTA.

Nowitzki to work out in Germany if lockout drags (AP)

ARLINGTON, Texas ? Once the World Series is over, Dirk Nowitzki will start planning a trip back to Germany unless there's progress toward starting the NBA season.

The NBA finals MVP said Saturday that he wants to resume training with his personal coach if it seems unlikely he will be playing for the Dallas Mavericks any time soon.

"It's time to really get back in the routine," Nowitzki said after throwing out the first pitch for Game 3 of the World Series. "Got to keep the options open, maybe see what's going on overseas."

Nowitzki has become a baseball fan over his 13 years in the United States. Because the Texas Rangers are his local team, he roots for them, and even has a blue jersey customized with his name and number. He threw out the first pitch at a game this summer after leading the Mavs to their first title and attended Game 6 of the AL championship series. He wasn't able to make it to a World Series game when the Rangers made it last year, so he was eager to attend ? and take part ? on Saturday night.

"I'm really proud of obviously representing the (Dallas-Fort Worth) Metroplex," he said.

Nowitzki has said he would wait until early 2012 before considering playing for a European team. With only training camp and the first two weeks of the season scrubbed so far, he is keeping that timetable.

"If the lockout still stays strong, I've definitely got to look into something there January and February," he said.

Nowitzki is still wearing a splint on the middle finger of his left hand, a remnant of the torn tendon sustained during Game 2 of the finals against the Miami Heat. The injury was supposed to have healed by now, but it turns out that he aggravated it while playing for Germany in the European championships.

"I took a ball on it in the Euros this summer, so it was kind of like sagging again," Nowitzki said. "I've got to keep it straight for, whatever, four, six weeks. But it doesn't bother me at all. It doesn't hurt or anything."

He said surgery won't be necessary.

Germany was knocked out of the Euros before the quarterfinals, eliminating its chances of making the 2012 Olympics. Nowitzki said he hasn't even touched a basketball since then.

"I've just been keeping in shape, you know, working out, doing lots of cardio and lifting a little bit and running," he said. "If the season will start any time soon, I think I'll be ready."

Nowitzki hasn't attended any of the labor meetings, but he said he would consider it. He said it was very disappointing that the latest round of negotiations didn't produce a settlement.

"We're all hoping, I guess, with the mediator, that something was going to happen, and just talks broke off, so it's very unfortunate," he said. "Hopefully we can get something going here any time soon. But it doesn't look good. "

Nowitzki said there are several parallels between the Rangers' quest for their first championship and the Mavs' winning their first, such as a late rally to win Game 2 and tie the series at 1-1 before heading home. The Mavs won it all on their second try and this is the Rangers' second trip.

"Hopefully, they'll learn from last year like we did in '06 and just be able to close it out," he said. "That would be awesome for the Metroplex to do it in the same year, get a championship and have another parade."

Would he sing "We Are The Champions" in their parade like he did during his team's celebration?

"For sure," he said, smiling. "If they want me in it, I'm there."

For Veteran, Iraq Decision a Relief, but no Surprise (ContributorNetwork)

Yahoo! News asked service members and their families for their perspective on Obama's decision to withdraw U.S. troops from Iraq . Below is a story from a reader.

FIRST PERSON | In August 2009, I was issued orders to mobilize for duty in Iraq. In preparation for this deployment, I read up on the situation on the ground in the country, spoke with my friends who had deployed prior to me, and prepared for my next overseas deployment. I was both anxious and excited about the prospect of going to war.

That was then, this is now. I was on my lunch break from school this afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va., when the news broke. President Barack Obama's news conference this afternoon did not come as a surprise to me, but it did come as a welcome relief. I'm not one to question the reasoning behind this choice, but I do understand the diplomatic implications for our military when we don't have the right protections in place.

In the past, I had deployed to support overseas operations via submarine, never setting a boot on the ground in combat. With just under 20 years of time in service as a sailor in the Navy, Coast Guard Reserve, and Navy Reserve, I understood the risks involved with going to sea, but not as a "sand sailor." I suspected that it would be different, but not much different from what I had experienced working in an Army centric, joint command over the prior two years.

I knew the Army was the lead service for operations in Iraq, so I boned up on the lingo I would be expected to know. As a junior non-commissioned officer (NCO), Petty Officer Second Class to be exact, I understood that I would be expected to lead and manage people rather than function as a technical expert. Wow, what a change this deployment would be for me!

At 39 years old, I realize that much of my adult life has been spent witnessing in the current wars. I have also the participated in the stability mission in the former Yugoslavia and the humanitarian relief mission in Haiti. I'm proud of my service and I know my family is proud as well.

My wife insisted that I display my medals, ribbons, and warfare pins in a case near the front door at home! Both my Mom and Dad continue to thank me for my service. I also get the occasional thanks from complete strangers and close friends when they see me in uniform out in town.

The bottom line is all the troops will leave Iraq by the end of the year. Some of my friends will be coming home. I'm glad to know that know that nearly 40,000 of my brothers and sisters in arms will be returning from the frontlines. I hope and pray that we don't have to return in my lifetime.

Icahn interested in Navistar, Oshkosh merger (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Billionaire investor Carl Icahn wants Navistar International Corp (NAV.N) to consider merging with rival Oshkosh Corp (OSK.N), though he has not yet made a formal proposal to either company, several people familiar with the situation said.

Icahn, who has amassed 10 percent stakes in each of the companies, is currently in discussions with Navistar about getting one or more seats on the board of the U.S. truck and engine maker, these people said.

Icahn reported his stake in Navistar last week and said at the time that he had held talks with management to discuss its business strategies and would seek additional conversations.

A deal, however, is far from certain. It's not clear whether either of the companies would be open to the idea and it remains to be seen how effective Icahn would be in getting what he wants at these companies.

Shares of Oshkosh, which have nearly halved this year as the company struggles with a declining defense business and the expensive 2006 acquisition of JLG Industries, jumped 8 percent to $19.87 on the New York Stock Exchange on Friday, valuing the company around $1.8 billion.

Navistar shares rose 3.5 percent to $41.50, valuing the company at over $3 billion. The stock has fallen some 30 percent this year.

"We like Navistar's prospects with or without a shotgun wedding, but it definitely would benefit from the increased scale and synergies that would materialize if it bought Oshkosh," Gimme Credit analyst Vicki Bryan said in a research note on Friday.

AT OSHKOSH

While Icahn is seeking board representation and discussions on business strategies with Navistar, his plans at Oshkosh have been less clear. He has not sought board representation there so far, and has agreed with Oshkosh management's view about conserving cash amid an uncertain defense outlook, according to people familiar with the situation.

There could be a potential conflict if Icahn attempted to gain board representation also at Oshkosh, since the two companies compete in the same industry, these people said.

A Navistar-Oshkosh combination has long been talked about as a possibility in the industry as the two companies can wring out costs and excess capacity. There are also some complementary units, such as Navistar's finance and engine-making businesses, that could benefit from a merger.

Oshkosh investors have been concerned about the company's exposure to defense contracts due to government-spending cutbacks and increased competition, including the threat posed by Navistar's own plan to grow in the sector.

Tying up with another player in the heavy-vehicle industry could protect Oshkosh from a downturn in the defense sector that many analysts are predicting.

Icahn did not return a request for comment. Oshkosh declined to comment on relationships with Icahn and other shareholders.

Navistar Chief Executive Dan Ustian said in an interview with Fox Business on Tuesday that Icahn "is into (Navistar) to make some money ... We have to deliver to him and all our other investors."

Icahn purchased his Oshkosh stake in June, when shares in the Wisconsin company were trading considerably higher.

Shares in mid-June, prior to Icahn's disclosure, were trading near $25 a share. By the time he started snapping up Navistar, Oshkosh shares were trading in the mid teens.

The corporate raider-turned-activist has had some high-profile disappointments this year in fights at Lions Gate Entertainment Corp (LGF.N), Clorox Co (CLX.N) and Forest Laboratories Inc (FRX.N).

But Icahn was also the biggest individual holder of El Paso Corp (EP.N), which agreed to be bought by Kinder Morgan Inc (KMI.N) earlier this week.

He also saw his years-long investment in Motorola turn around earlier this year when Google Inc (GOOG.O) agreed to buy Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc (MMI.N) for $12.5 billion.
