Nokia And Microsoft To Spend $200 Million On US Marketing, Sales Incentives Of $10-15 Per Phone

Paul Thurrott, who always has excellent information about Microsoft?s internal plans, revealed that Nokia and Microsoft will spend $200 million on marketing for the upcoming Nokia Ace. This is two times as much as the $100 million figure BetaNews claimed earlier today.

In any case, this will be the biggest marketing initiative Nokia has ever attempted, and hopefully lead to ?millions of Windows Phone handsets? being sold in the US in the first half of 2012, according to Microsoft?s internal goals.

Part of the $200 million will apparently be used for retail staff, who are set to receive $10-15 for each handset sold, which should provide ample incentive for sales persons to recommend Windows Phones over iPhones and Android devices. At least, it should go a long way to prevent sales persons from actively talking people out of Windows Phones, as it has historically been the case.

The Nokia Ace is rumored to be the codename of the Lumia 900, essentially a bigger version of the Lumia 800 with a 4.3? display and LTE, set to launch exclusively on AT&T on March 18.

(AP Photo/Mark Lennihan)

(AP) ? U.S. manufacturers ended 2011 with their best month of growth since the late spring. And the struggling construction industry spent more on projects for the third time in four months.

The data bolstered hopes that the economy is gaining momentum and helped Wall Street start 2012 with a bang.

Factories hired more workers in December, saw the most growth in new orders since April and ramped up production. U.S. builders spent more in November on single-family homes, apartments and remodeling projects.

The strong reports correspond with other positive signs for the economy. Consumer confidence is up, unemployment benefit applications have tumbled and the unemployment rate is at a three-and-a-half-year low.

Economists caution that Europe's debt crisis will likely slow global growth in the first half of the year.

But on Tuesday, the outlook was mostly positive.

The Institute for Supply Management, a trade group of purchasing managers, said its manufacturing index rose to 53.9 from 52.7 in November. Readings above 50 indicate expansion.

The Commerce Department said spending on construction projects rose 1.2 percent in November. The increase was the largest since a 2.2 percent rise in August.

"The trend for the U.S. economy is most decidedly to the upside," said Dan Greenhaus, an analyst at brokerage firm BTIG LLC in New York.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose by 215 points in midday trading. Broader indexes also climbed. Reports that manufacturing grew in China and India, two of the world's largest economies, also drove markets higher.

U.S manufacturing has expanded for more than two years. Factories were one of the first areas of the economy to start growing after the recession officially ended in June 2009. They faltered over the summer after Japan's March 11 earthquake disrupted auto and electronics supply chains.

The December ISM survey showed many factories have largely recovered from their slump earlier this year

Exports rose despite the trouble in Europe. Growth in new orders means output will likely increase in the coming months. And U.S. factories hired last month at the fastest pace since June, an optimistic sign ahead of Friday's important measure of job growth in December.

"All in all, an upbeat report," said Peter Newland, an economist at Barclays Capital, who noted that the stronger manufacturing activity should contribute to faster economic growth in the October-December quarter.

Construction spending rose 1.2 percent in November to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of $807.1 billion. While that's barely half the $1.5 trillion that economists consider healthy, home construction has begun a gradual rebound and likely added to the nation's economic growth in 2011.

Spending jumped 9.5 percent on home improvement projects in November. It rose 1.5 percent on single-family home construction and gained 1.3 percent on apartment building.

"While spending on single-family construction still remains extremely depressed, it has now increased for six straight months and looks consistent with other indicators signaling some improvement in the housing market," said Daniel Silver, an economist with JPMorgan Chase.

The U.S. economy still faces plenty of challenges. Europe is likely already in recession because of its ongoing debt crisis.

A separate survey of European manufacturers released earlier this week found that factory activity shrank last month for the 17 nations that use the euro.

"It is hard to see the U.S. economy strengthening this year when the euro-zone is on the cusp of a potentially severe recession and when growth in Asia is set to slow," said Paul Dales, an economist at Capital Economics.

Consumers could also pull back on spending. That would hurt growth because consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of economic activity.

But for now, Americans are feeling a little better about the economy.

The Conference Board said last week that its consumer confidence index rose in December to the highest level since April.

And the number of people applying for unemployment benefits each week is dropping steadily, evidence that companies are cutting fewer jobs. Weekly applications have dropped by 10 percent in the past three months.

Employers are hiring more workers, too. The economy generated an average of 143,000 net jobs a month from September through November. That's almost double the pace for the previous three months.

The economy likely grew at an annual rate of 3 percent or more in the final three months of this year, analysts say. That would top the 1.8 percent growth rate in the July-September quarter, and the 0.9 percent growth rate in the first half of the year.

Analysts forecast a modest expansion of 2.4 percent in 2012, an Associated Press survey of economists found.

Samsung Says No on ICS ?Value Pack? for Galaxy S and Original Galaxy Tab

Man, when the Galaxy Nexus was first debuted with Ice Cream Sandwich it looked amazing (still does). However you?re an owner of a Samsung Galaxy S or an original Galaxy Tab and your contract isn?t up for a while. Maybe it is, but you?re thinking to yourself that you love the Galaxy S hardware or you love that little tablet and that maybe if you hope really hard Samsung will grace your device with Ice Cream Sandwich.?Well even with hope sometimes we don?t get what we want, as you well know, Samsung made it clear that the Galaxy S and the Galaxy Tab wouldn?t be seeing the awesome, new Android 4.0 OS. Well, that was until they back pedaled and rumors were flying about that these devices would ?see it or that they may receive a ?value pack? that would give the best features of ICS without the need for a full update instead.

Samsung believes that the hardware just doesn?t have the stones to run ICS?efficiently even with Google saying that ICS should run on most Gingerbread devices. Folks cried foul considering that the Nexus S and the Galaxy S run very similar hardware and as we told you in a previous article, Samsung wouldn?t be bringing 4.0 to the Galaxy S because of the TouchWiz skin. Apparently there isn?t Ram or Rom to run both that and the ICS OS. So again, rumors started flying that Samsung was bring the value pack. Well I hate to be the bearer of bad news but Samsung backpedaled yet again and stated that they would not be bringing ICS to either device. A spokesperson for Samsung stated that the company won?t offer the update due to the older Galaxy devices? hardware specifications and that they are limited and optimized for Android 2.3.

So with that said, as of right now it appears that the owners of the Galaxy S or Galaxy Tab will not see ICS cream sandwich unless they root the device and flash a ROM on it. Personally I would hold out until CM9 comes out which from their projected timeline back in November should be relatively soon. Maybe Samsung will backtrack their view on ICS for the S and Tab but I wouldn?t hold my breath, sorry.

Obama ending vacation, readying for campaign

(AP) ? With an eye on the 2012 campaign, President Barack Obama is wrapping up a Hawaiian vacation and planning to jump back into his re-election campaign.

The president is scheduled to leave Monday evening after a 10-day vacation. He will arrive in Washington on Tuesday morning, just hours before Republican presidential candidates square off in the Iowa caucuses, the first nominating contest of the 2012 campaign.

Obama plans to make his presence in the campaign known quickly.

He will host a live web chat with supporters in Iowa on Tuesday. The next day, he will travel to Cleveland to talk about the economy, the top issue in the race so far.

Aides said Obama spent time on vacation brainstorming ideas for his Jan. 24 State of the Union address, where he will lay out an agenda that will serve as the basis for his campaign message

Obama returns to Washington facing further debate on extending payroll tax cuts, the same issue that consumed Washington for the final days of December. Congress broke through a stalemate just days before Christmas, agreeing to extend the cuts for two months. Lawmakers will get back to work later this month to negotiate a full-year extension, a proposal Obama supports.

White House officials say the tax cut extension is the last "must-do" legislative item on Obama's agenda this year. His strategy for his fourth year in office will focus on taking executive actions that do not need approval from lawmakers as he seeks to break away from a deeply unpopular Congress.

Eli throws 3 TDs, N.Y. defense sacks Romo five times in 30-14

By TOM CANAVAN

updated 11:30 p.m. ET Jan. 1, 2012

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - Thanks to Eli Manning and Victor Cruz, an all-or-nothing game was all New York Giants and nothing but frustration for the Dallas Cowboys.

Manning threw three touchdown passes, including a 74-yarder to Cruz early, and the Giants claimed the final spot in the NFL playoffs, beating the Cowboys 31-14 on Sunday night to win the NFC East.

"I knew we were going to fight and keep playing until the end, I feel good about the way we're handling the ups and downs, and it comes down to finishing," Manning said after throwing for 346 yards and no interceptions.

New York (9-7) won three of its final four games for 65-year-old coach Tom Coughlin and earned a wild-card home game next Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons (10-6).

"We've had a lot of ups and down, but when our team needed it most we responded," said the up-and-coming Cruz, who has capped his team-record setting season with six catches for 178 yards. "We were able to keep level-headed when we were on the four-game skid."

The Cowboys (8-8) lost four of their final five games in their first full season under coach Jason Garrett.

Dallas was its own worst enemy in a game with the season on the line. They missed tackles on all three of the Giants' three first-half touchdowns, failed to recover two fumbles within their grasp in the half and failed to convert on a Tony Romo sneak on fourth-and-1 at the Giants 10 while trailing 21-7.

"It's extremely painful and it's a damn shame," Jones said. "We have a good team and I thought we would be going to the playoffs, but that didn't happen. We have to be able to take some of the good with the bad and move on. We did a lot of good things this year, but to point to one thing why this happened would be subjective. We're 8-8 and we have to be better than that."

Romo, who played with a bruised right hand, moved the Cowboys in the second half but all he could generate were touchdown passes of 34 and 6 yards to Laurent Robinson, the last one getting Dallas within a 21-14 with 10:15 to play.

Cruz, however, had a 44-yard third-down catch and another for 20 yards to set up a 28-yard Lawrence Tynes' field goal and Manning iced the game with a 4-yard TD pass to Hakeem Nicks with 3:41 to play.

Manning finished 24 of 33 for 346 yards and no interceptions as the Giants beat the Cowboys for the second time in four games and ended a regular season marked by inconsistency on a high note. Cruz, who set a single-season record for yards receiving, finished with six catches for 178 yards, a 29.7 yard average, and of course, he did his touchdown salsa after the first score.

Week?17 in the NFL
Wild weekend ahead

??What chance do the Detroit Lions have against the explosive Saints in New Orleans?

Romo was 29 of 37 for 289 yards but he was sacked six times, including twice by Osi Umenyiora who returned to the lineup for the first time since spraining an ankle late last month. Dallas' final possession ended with Romo being sacked by Justin Tuck and losing a fumble.

"We needed this win," Umenyiora said. "This is the biggest win we've been a part of for a while."

The Giants haven't won a playoff game since beating the-then unbeaten New England Patriots in the Super Bowl in 2008, and the one thing that is apparent is that this team is peaking.

Coming off a 29-14 win over the rival Jets last week in what might have been the Giants best game of the season, Coughlin's team put together another outstanding 30 minutes in jumping to a 21-0 halftime lead.

Cruz, who sparked the win over the Jets' with a team-record 99-yard touchdown, made another monster play on the Giants' second offensive series, turning a short pass into points.

Cruz caught a short square out, eluded a tackle by Terence Newman, turned the corner after getting a seal block from Nicks and outraced two defenders down the sideline in front of the Giants bench for a 7-0 lead.

Dallas went three-and-out but had a chance to get right back into the game when Will Blackmon muffed a punt at near his 30-yard line and Alan Ball failed to recover.

Manning made Dallas pay. Manning hit Nicks for 18 yards and Devin Thomas for 14 en route on a 68-yard yard drive that Bradshaw capped with his 5-yard run. Safety Abram Elam had a chance to tackle Bradshaw in the backfield and Bradshaw scooted into the end zone after he missed.

Manning had passes of 14 and 12 yards to rookie fullback Henry Hynoski in an 80-yard touchdown drive just before the half. Bradshaw, who had a 29-yard run early in the drive, broke a tackle by linebacker Bradie James in scoring on a 10-yard swing pass for a 21-0 lead.

The Giants had chances to put the game away in the third quarter. They moved to the Dallas 42 on the opening possession of the second half and elected to punt.

Romo then drove the Cowboys 94 yards with a no-huddle offense, hitting Robinson on a 34-yard go pattern down the right sideline on a play that cornerback Corey Webster was beaten.

An interception by safety Antrel Rolle gave New York the ball in Dallas territory but they failed to convert a fourth-and-1 at the Dallas 35 and the Cowboys came right back to cut the deficit to seven.

Rosenthal: Lions-Saints shootout heads wild-card storylines

??Rosenthal: In the NFC, New Orleans Saints are only the second 13-3 team ever to not earn a first-round bye. (The 1999 Titans were the first team.) In the AFC, the 12-4 Steelers are arguably the conference's most complete team. If I?m the one arguing. The presence of those two powerhouse teams is just one of the playoff storylines to watch this week.

Star exclusive: Five of the top 6 revenue-generating hockey clubs based in Canada

Image

Rick Westhead Staff Reporter

A secret National Hockey League report detailing the ticket revenues of its 30 teams provides additional ammunition for those suggesting more struggling U.S.-based teams should relocated to Canada.

The confidential document shows that the six Canadian NHL clubs last season accounted for about 33 per cent of the $1.2 billion (U.S.) in league ticket revenue. In 2007-08, Canada's six teams represented 31 per cent.

The report, which was obtained by the Star from several league sources, suggests operating a club north of the border is much more lucrative for the NHL. Five of the top six-revenue generating clubs are based in Canada, with the New York Rangers being the lone team from the U.S. in that group.

?There will be a lot of people using these numbers to argue that the league would be better off with teams in Quebec City and Hamilton, Ont., rather than Columbus, Ohio, and a number of other locations where the NHL is not setting the world on fire,? said Marc Ganis, president of a Chicago sports advisory firm that has advised the buyers of several NHL franchises.

?The NHL had this initiative in the 1990s to expand into the U.S. sunbelt and by anyone?s definition, that strategy has been demonstrated to be only marginally successful,? Ganis said. "I think the argument for more Canadian teams definitely has merit."

While the six Canadian-based teams outpaced their U.S. rivals in ticket income last year, it?s unclear where they did the same with sponsorship and broadcast revenue. The NHL and the NHL Players Association are still negotiating the final figures on a broad report on hockey-related revenue for 2010-11 season.

The NHL report does however indicate that some U.S.-based clubs have markedly improved their financial standing. For the most part, those clubs are playing meaningful playoff hockey with young exciting stars, but they have also found new way to connect with their fan bases.

The five teams who have most increased their ticket revenue over past five seasons are all based in the U.S. A year after winning the Stanley Cup, the Chicago Blackhawks generated about $1.1 million per home game in regular-season ticket revenue in 2010-11, more than double the $500,000 per game the team garnered in 2007-08.

The Washington Capitals' ticket revenue climbed 82 per cent in five seasons to $1 million per game last year. Other top gainers were the Pittsburgh Penguins, with a 38 per cent increase ($1.1 million per game in 2010-11), the Boston Bruins (up 38 to $1.1 million) and the New York Rangers (up 23 per cent to $1.6 million.) The Penguins, for instance, have had 227 consecutive sellouts, and boast 14,000 season-ticket holders. There's another 9,000 on the waiting list.

Dave Morehouse, president of the Pittsburgh Penguins, said his team's improved fortunes aren't only because the team has superstar Sidney Crosby.

Unlike some U.S.-based NHL teams, the Penguins have emphasized growing youth hockey in the city.

"We have at least three or four games every year where we hold 900 tickets back and on the day of the game, students can get any seats for $25," Morehouse said. "We also have a free exhibition game each season. We don't sell it to a sponsor or anything. We just get 18,000 tickets printed and distribute them through youth hockey. It's the rowdiest exhibition game you?ll ever see.

The report also shows that after years of steady increases, the league's most profitable teams, including the Toronto Maple Leafs, are no longer reaping double-digit increases in ticket revenue.

The most improved Canadian club was the Vancouver Canucks (up 21 per cent to $1.7 million.) "This is good for the league so long as the Canadian dollar stays where it is," said former Maple Leaf Sports executive Bill Watters. "If it goes back to 60 cents what a mess the NHL will be."

The currency exchange rate is important because Canadian NHL teams generate most of their revenue in Canadian dollars while their largest expenses, player costs, are in U.S. dollars. The more valuable the Canadian dollar is, the less expensive it is for Canadian teams to buy U.S. dollars to cover their expenses.

It will come as no surprise that the richest NHL team was the Montreal Canadiens, who league sources said were slightly ahead of the Toronto Maple Leafs with $2 million worth of ticket revenue per game.

Based on 41 home games, the Canadiens generated about $82 million in 2010-11-excluding revenue from preseason and playoff games.

While Canadian-based clubs are among the most successfully, the report suggests that ? with the exception of the Canucks ? ticket pricing has reached a tipping point north of the border. The average Leafs ticket is now twice that of the Boston Bruins, the most recent Stanley Cup champions. It appears the Leafs may have maxed out.

The report also highlights the continued struggles for the league-owned Phoenix Coyotes, who garnered $420,000 per game in 2010-11, down from $450,000 in 2007-08. The Coyotes are losing more than $30 million a season and several league executives and NHL Players' Association officials have said it's only a matter of time before the club is relocated.

"It's strange for sure," Watters said. "It's a nice arena, but it won't work. The location is so far outside the city of Phoenix that for fans, it's like driving from Burlington to Oshawa every night."

Perhaps the most surprising data from the league report concerns the New York Islanders, whose $392,000 ticket revenue per game was only better than the Thrashers. The Islanders' ticket revenue was down 28 per cent over the past five seasons, despite the fact the team plays in North America's largest media market.

The Dallas Stars, who had the biggest decline in ticket revenue among the 30 NHL teams, generated $660,000 per game, down 30 per cent from $950,000.

Unlike other pro sports leagues such as the National Football League, which generates billions of dollars in revenue from huge TV and sponsorship contracts, the NHL is a so-called "gate-driven" league where ticket revenue accounts for close to half of the league's total revenue.

The league often publicizes its attendance, and has suggested the number of fans to attend NHL games has been record-setting in recent seasons. Trouble is, the NHL's attendance figures are based merely on tickets distributed, not overall revenue from ticket sales.
