No sweat for Bolt to break record, says mathematician

Without any extra effort or fitness, Usain Bolt could slice a relatively massive 0.13 seconds from his historic 9.58 second 100-metre world record sprint at the 2009 World Championships in Berlin.

The reduction is 0.03 seconds faster than a previous estimate of Bolt's minimum possible time, pegged at 9.48 seconds by Mark Denny of Stanford University in California.

The factors that would effortlessly lower his time to 9.45 seconds are proposed by mathematician John Barrow at the University of Cambridge.

Firstly, Barrow notes that Bolt is notoriously slow off the blocks. In Berlin, he was second slowest to react to the starting gun, taking 0.146 seconds to get going compared with 0.119 seconds for the speediest starter. This means that it actually took Bolt just 9.434 seconds to run the 100 metres.

Under international athletics rules, sprinters are judged to have made a false start if they leave the blocks within 0.1 seconds of the starting gun. But even with this limitation, Bolt could safely cut his reaction time from 0.146 to 0.13 seconds. This would lower the final time for the sprint from 9.58 to 9.53 seconds.

Secondly, when Bolt ran his epic race, he had a tailwind of just 0.9 metres per second. Barrow calculates that if he had a maximum possible tailwind of 2 metres per second, he would waste less effort battling wind drag, which would reduce his record by a further 0.05 seconds to 9.48 seconds.

Already a full tenth of a second faster than his Berlin record, Bolt could finally shave a further 0.03 seconds off his time if he ran the race at an altitude up to, but not exceeding, 1000 metres, where the air is thinner and offers less resistance. Records don't stand unless they're at altitudes below 1000 metres.

"These are amazing improvements but they can all happen without Bolt becoming a better sprinter," Barrow writes. "They serve to illustrate how far we are from any type of 'ultimate' sprinting speed in the men's 100 metres, and the scale of the improvements possible."

Denny agrees that there are many reasons why it should be possible for Bolt to run faster, but that these seldom materialise in reality. "It's easy to say Bolt could gain 0.05 seconds with a perfect start, but trying to achieve that sort of quick getaway got him disqualified in the finals of last year's world championships," he says.

Also, if the tailwind is slightly more than 2 metres per second, the record wouldn't count, and with London at sea level, there will be no extra altitude to aid him during this summer's Olympics, says Denny, who worked out his "theoretical maximum" on the basis of historical sprint times.

Controversially, Barrow also argues that Bolt is no longer the fastest man on earth. At the end of last season, Bolt's training partner, Yohan Blake, ran the second-fastest 200 metres ever in Daegu, South Korea, at 19.26 seconds, a shade short of Bolt's world record breaking 19.19 second sprint in Berlin in 2009.

But Blake took an eternity to get going ? no less than 0.27 seconds. This meant that it took Blake just 18.99 seconds to run the 200 metres itself, compared with 19.06 seconds for Bolt in Berlin after factoring in his starting time. Halving these times to get a theoretical 100-metre score means that Blake covered the distance in 9.495 seconds compared to Bolt's 9.53 seconds, making Blake faster than Bolt ? in theory at least.

Games journalism: I'm suffering from review-writing fatigue | Bitmob ...

Unlike most little boys, becoming a policeman or firefighter wasn?t even on my radar.

As a small child, I dreamed of reviewing games as my full-time job. Literally, I actually had dreams about being an adult and?reviewing games?as a career on multiple occasions.

Today, I?m still trying to achieve this goal. I?ve made tremendous progress over the last year or so, and I?m lucky enough to be in the position where I can now receive review titles from a number of different publishers and video-game manufacturers. Lately, I?ve been?reviewing titles?like crazy, and it?s a dream come true.

However, I?m?quickly?starting to realize something: Playing a game simply for review purposes and not because I want to enjoy the experience it?s offering takes a lot of the fun out of playing?video games.

?

It might sound like I?m complaining, and I guess I really am in some ways. Don?t mistake that for me being?ungrateful, though. I?m thankful for every single game a publisher or PR rep sends out to me. Even now, sometimes getting my hands on games from certain companies takes a little?convincing?as I?m still relatively new to the industry and the local?Toronto gaming scene.

I guess my 8-year-old self thought reviewing games would be slightly more fun. I didn?t realize that sometimes I might have to play through a game I wasn?t that excited about in a relatively short period of time. Reviewing games is still a blast, and I really enjoy it. But on occasions when I don?t feel like playing a particular game that I need to review in a few days because I?d rather play something else, the occupation straight up sucks.

This happened a lot when?Mass Effect 3?was first released. I had a barrage of titles to review, but all I really wanted to do was see the ending to Shepard?s epic space-opera story. I?m not saying the games pictured in the header image of this story are?terrible video games. In fact, for the most part, they?re pretty awesome. Right now, though, I?d just rather be playing?Mass Effect 3?than any other video game.

The fact that this isn?t my full-time job is also a factor. I have work, school, a life?outside?the realm of gaming, and a girlfriend to entertain. Sometimes, there just really isn?t as much time for gaming in the average day as I?d like. I also freelance for a variety of?different publications?now and still have to hold down the fort as GameJudgment?s?Editor-in-Chief. I?m not complaining. I?m happy, and I love what I?m doing, but I wish there were more hours in the day for gaming.

This is why when I purchased?Mass Effect 3,?I made the?conscious?decision not to review the game. I didn?t want to rush through Shepard?s final journey. I wanted to take my time and enjoy the experience. It may take me a while to reach the game?s apparently?terrible ending, but that?s okay with me. With some?video games, I feel like it?s more about the journey to complete them than actually finishing, and that brings the highest sense of satisfaction.

As a?reviewer, I think it?s important that you don?t end up writing something about every single game you play. It?s crucial that sometimes you just play a video game simply for the sake of enjoyment and for no other reason but that.

It helps you to remember why you enjoy playing?video games?so much in the first place.

Kick It Up With Cardio Exercise | Health & Fitness

Before you jump on that Stairmaster or start pounding the pavement, make sure you have a cardio exercise plan that will give you the most bang for your muscle burn.

Whether it?s pounding the pavement, logging miles on the bike, or climbing those stairs that seem to go nowhere, it?s all about?cardio?exercise. But other than a sweaty t-shirt, what do you have to show for your workout? A slimmer stomach? Killer quads? Are you exercising for the right amount of time to reap the full health benefits of cardiovascular fitness, or often enough?

Exercise experts, including fitness maven Denise Austin, answer cardio questions for WebMD, so you can make the most of your muscle burn.

Cardio Exercise: The Heart of the Matter

?Cardiovascular exercise is any type of exercise that increases the work of the heart and lungs,? says Tommy Boone, PhD, a founding member of the American Society of Exercise Physiologists. ?Walking,?jogging, and running are common forms of cardiovascular, or aerobic, exercise.?

From running and walking, to swimming, elliptical cross-training, biking, Stairmaster, and rowing ? to name a few ? the physical benefits of cardio exercise abound, explains says Len Kravitz, PhD, senior exercise physiologist for IDEA Health and Fitness Association. They include:

Reduced risk of?heart disease

  • Improved blood?cholesterol?and triglyceride levels
  • Improved heart function
  • Reduced risk of?osteoporosis
  • Improved muscle mass

?The American College of Sports Medicine and the CDC recommend, for health, that adults should accumulate 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on most days of the week,? says Kravitz, who is also a coordinator of exercise science at the University of New Mexico. ?And to improve cardiovascular endurance, they recommend 20 to 60 minutes on three to five days per week.?

Now that you know the benefits of cardio exercise, where should your heart-pumping fitness plan begin?

Getting Into the Zone

To help you make the most of your cardio exercise workout ? help your heart, increase muscle, and lose fat ? Denise Austin, fitness expert, author of seven books, including?Shrink Your Female Fat Zones,?and star of 50 fitness videos, gives WebMD some tips.

?To reap all the benefits of a cardio workout, you should sustain your workout for 20 minutes or more ? I do 30 minutes myself ? on a schedule of about three to four times per week,? says Austin.

Not only that, but you need to get in the zone, which calculates into burning calories and fat.

?The best way to find out if you are burning fat is to take your pulse halfway into your cardio workout for six seconds, then add a zero to that number,? Austin tells WebMD.

This number is your heart rate per minute.

Next, calculate your zone.

?Take the number 220, then minus your age, then calculate 70% of that number for your target beats per minute,? says Austin, and that?s your zone. ?If your heart rate halfway through your workout is over that 70% mark take it down a level, and if under, pick up the pace.?

Not a math wiz? There are easier ways to figure it out.

?Another great way to find out your zone is to get a pulse monitor, which takes the math out of it,? says Austin. ?Or very simply, take the talk test: while you are doing aerobics, talk a sentence. If you are too winded to finish the sentence, you are overdoing it, or if it?s too easy to say, kick it up a notch!?

Getting Cut With Cardio

If you?re looking for ripped abs and toned arms, interval training will help get you there ? especially if you throw in some weights.

?I love interval training because it consistently jump-starts your?metabolism,? says Austin. ?Let?s say you are walking ? you could power-walk really fast for three minutes to get the burst of calorie burn, and then walk calmly and slowly for one minute, which offers recovery. By switching back and forth, you push the muscle and let it relax over and over and this gives you maximum results.? You can do interval training on any type of cardio exercise machine ? alternating a high intensity with a more moderate level.

Austin suggests doing weights during your recovery time, such as bicep curls or tricep toners, to reap the benefits of both cardio exercise and?weight training, and along with interval training, add dedicated?weight?sessions to your regimen to burn fat and sculpt muscle at the same time.

?Do cardio four days a week for 30 minutes, and add a weight-training workout at least two times a week at 20-minute sessions,? says Austin. ?Cardio will burn the fat, and it?s the weight training that gives you the toned sculpted look that will have you bikini ready.?

Cardio?s Best Fat Burner

So you want the bottom line: Which cardio exercise will fat-bust the best?

?Running is the best option for calorie burning, in my opinion,? says Niki Kimbrough, personal fitness expert with Bally Total Fitness. ?Whether it?s outside or on a treadmill, it?s the best exercise because you?re burning calories and you?re strengthening your legs and heart ? it?ll get you nice and lean.?

Beginners should start with 20 minutes, explains Kimbrough, and work their way up.

?It takes about 20 minutes for your body to get going, and then your body starts to kick it to another level,? says Kimbrough. ?Ideally, you want to run for about 30 or 45 minutes.?

For those with bad knees, Kimbrough recommends the elliptical machine as a good second choice.

In case running isn?t your game, Kravitz takes another track.

?I really feel the most important message is to chose a cardio modality or modalities that you like,? says Kravitz. ?Because in the final outcome, if a person enjoys a mode of exercise, that is what all research shows they will choose.?

Splitting It Up

While it may not be the fastest way to a body built for the beach, splitting up your cardio exercise still has its benefits.

?In order to achieve the best results, and also in order to maintain a healthy heart, it is best to not split up your cardio workouts,? says Austin. ?You need the consistency of 20 minutes or more of an elevated pulse to ensure great results. However, something is better than nothing.  If all the time you have is 10 minutes or even five minutes, it is better than sitting still; you will still be garnished benefits and?lose weight.?

Kick Up Your Cardio

Let?s be honest ? cardio exercise can get boring after awhile. How can you jazz it up and make it interesting again? The experts recommend never letting it get stale in the first place.

?I believe you should do different types of cardio exercises during the course of a week, if possible,? says Austin. ?The thing to remember is that too much repetition will?fatiguemuscles and you will?plateau, which will slow your results down.? By adding variety to your workouts you give muscle groups a chance to recover on their days off and you can maintain a steady progress.?

Kravitz agrees with adding options to cardio exercise.

?Vary the mode, vary the place you train, vary the workout, vary the time of day, vary the intensity of the workout, vary the duration ? vary, vary, vary,? says Kravitz. ?That is what I have found to work the best for exercise compliance.?

Before starting a new exercise program, it is important to have a discussion with your doctor about types and levels of activity. Your doctor can advise on any limitations or restrictions you may have.

Wahoo Fitness BlueSC cycling sensor preview

Wahoo Fitness BlueSC cycling sensor preview
It wasn't all that long ago that Wahoo Fitness unveiled it's iPhone 4S friendly BlueHR heart monitor to let you track your workouts. Well, it turns out that Wahoo's been working on something new, and at a Bluetooth 4.0 event today in SF, we got a sneak peek at the company's next device, the BlueSC. It's a gadget aimed at would-be Alberto Contadors that wirelessly tracks the speed and pedaling cadence of cyclists via Wahoo's existing app. It's a three piece affair with a main hub that straps to your bike frame, one magnet that goes on your wheel, and a second that's placed on the pedal crank. The hub gets rotational info from each magnet as it swings past and then shoots your stats to your phone via Bluetooth, allowing you to track your performance as you chug up the Alpe d'Huez. (OK, maybe just around the neighborhood.) What you see above is a working prototype device, but Wahoo's being coy about further hardware details, pricing and availability -- though we can say that it's quite lightweight and can't weigh more than few grams. In the meantime, you can get a better look at your next training tool in the gallery below.
