OCZ's new Vector SSD breaks cover at IDF, packs in-house developed Indilinx controller

OCZ's new Vector SSD breaks cover, packs wholly inhouse Indilinx controller

As we were wandering the floor today at IDF 2012, we happened upon an OCZ rep who pulled the company's new 2.5-inch SATA 3 SSD out of his pocket and let us get our mitts on it. Called the Vector, it will replace the well-received Vertex 4 at the top of OCZ's lineup. Like its predecessor, the Vertex packs an Indilinx controller, but this time it's the Barefoot 3, which was developed totally in-house without any assistance from Marvell designs. You can expect to see 256GB and 512GB versions of the Vector hit the market in Q4, with other sizes possibly showing up after. Of course, IOPS, read/write speeds and pricing remain a mystery, but we can share the gallery of shots below.

Stefani calls marriage 'biggest accomplishment'

Todd Williamson / AP file

Gavin Rossdale and Gwen Stefani with their sons Zuma and Kingston in Los Angeles in June.

By Access Hollywood

Gwen Stefani and rocker Gavin Rossdale have been married for a decade and the No Doubt frontwoman takes great pride in their longevity as a couple.

?A miracle,? she told the October issue of Marie Claire of staying together for so long. ?My biggest accomplishment is my marriage so far. Because it?s hard, everyone knows it?s hard.

?[Marriage] is something that I always wanted to do successfully,? she added. ?It was a dream of mine. I like the official-ness and the family-ness of it all, having the same name and making decisions together.?

The couple has faced their share of tabloid rumors touting the demise of their relationship over the years, but Stefani said they are still going strong.

?[Our relationship] is better than it?s ever been,? she said. ?Like, we?re learning about each other all the time. He?s an amazing dad, he works so hard?-- I can hear him writing songs through the wall, and it is at a much quicker pace than me!?

Stefani said one of the things she loves about her husband is how smitten he is with his music superstar wife.

?He balances me out. And he?-- he never stops liking me, which is awesome,? she said. ?It makes me feel happy, that someone likes me as much as he does.?

The couple is parents to two boys?-- Kingston, 6, and Zuma, 4 -- and Gwen revealed the boys are bundles of energy.

?From the moment they wake up, they start beating on each other,? she said. ?I never knew they would be so physical. They?re just starting to play real well together, but with a lot of fighting. They do look out for each other?-- especially the little one, he really loves his older brother.?

Gwen would like another child, but said she?s also happy if their family numbers stay the same.

?I really, really, really wanted one about two years ago,? she told Marie Claire of having another baby. ?And it didn?t really work out. So ...?I feel good with what we?ve got. Everything works out how it should. You can?t plan anything, right? You can try.?

Do You Have a Photo ID, Young Man?

A New York Police Department mobile security outpost stands near the World Trade Center site. A New York Police Department mobile security outpost near the World Trade Center site in New York City

The National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York is a profound, beautiful monument to the lives lost in the 1993 and 2001 terror attacks at the World Trade Center. But the iron curtain of security surrounding the site forms its own monument: to our successful adaptation to the realities of a post-9/11 world, and perhaps to choices that speak less well of us.

Advance tickets are required to enter this public, outdoor memorial. To book them, you?re obliged to provide your home address, email address, and phone number, and the full names of everyone in your party. It is ?strongly recommended? that you print your tickets at home, which is where you must leave explosives, large bags, hand soap, glass bottles, rope, and bubbles. Also, ?personal wheeled vehicles? not limited to bicycles, skateboards, and scooters, and anything else deemed inappropriate. Anyone age 13 or older must carry photo ID, to be displayed ?when required and/or requested.?

Once at the memorial you must go through a metal detector and your belongings must be X-rayed. Officers will inspect your ticket?that invulnerable document you nearly left on your printer?at least five times. One will draw a blue line on it; 40 yards (and around a dozen security cameras) later, another officer will shout at you if your ticket and its blue line are not visible. Eventually you?ll reach the memorial itself, where there are more officers and no bathrooms. You?re allowed to take photographs anywhere outside the security screening area?in theory if not always in practice.

Eleven years after 9/11 and a year after the memorial opened, it?s time for a freedom-loving people to consider the purpose and impact of such security measures. Let?s ask the experts?and ourselves?three questions. Is enhanced security necessary at the memorial? Are the specific measures in place likely to be effective? And what is their cost to a free society??

At first glance, the need for security at the Sept. 11 memorial seems self-evident. The memorial stands on some of the most sacred ground in America; a third attack there would be an unimaginable blow. But just because an incident would be tragic doesn?t mean it?s a serious possibility. Depending on who?s counting, either 14 or 16 people in America have been killed by Islamic extremists since 9/11?13 at Fort Hood, Texas. There have been other plots, of course, disrupted by law enforcement, though a recent study described about half of those as ?essentially created or facilitated in a major way by the authorities.? Meanwhile about 15,000 Americans are murdered annually. Tobacco claims the lives of around 440,000 Americans per year. In 2011, lightning killed 26.? ?

Counterterror experts I spoke with differed on the level of security required at the Sept. 11 memorial. But even among those who said they understood the enhanced security, nearly all couched that understanding in terms of the site?s iconic status, not actual risk to the memorial. Richard Barrett, coordinator for the U.N.?s al-Qaeda and Taliban monitoring team, described the likelihood of an attack on the memorial as ?incredibly small.? Max Abrahms, a counterterrorism fellow at Johns Hopkins University, said that although the memorial?s ?extra psychological importance? warrants heightened security, ?it's now clear that sleeper cells are not infesting our country ? al-Qaeda can hardly generate any violence at all.? In policy circles, al-Qaeda and the term ?strategic defeat? increasingly go together.

Of course, even if there is little risk to the site, the security measures may have some emotional value. The best argument I heard for enhanced security is the comfort that it gives some 9/11 family members and survivors. A representative for the September 11th Families' Association told me they ?appreciate all measures taken to insure the safety of visitors.? The president of the World Trade Center Survivors? Network said much the same?though he also acknowledged a ?diversity of opinion? among members. But not everyone is comforted by heavy security. John Mueller, a counterterror expert at Ohio State University and the Cato Institute, says that ?visible?security measures dealing with terrorism?tend to make people more anxious?about it.? He has research to back himself up.

If the purpose of elaborate security is to protect raw nerves rather than to address an active threat, it?s reasonable to ask how long it will be in place. Some memorial documents refer to controlled access during an ?interim operating period? that runs through the end of 2013; others promise ?open access ? from all sides? only when the entire World Trade Center site (not just the main tower) is fully rebuilt. It?s unclear when that will be?2016? TBD? (It wasn?t any clearer to a spokesman for the memorial.) And if the security measures are a response to an active threat, wouldn?t it be ill-advised to dispense with them the day the WTC site is finished?

For the sake of argument, let?s assume the memorial really is at risk. Are the current measures effective??

It?s not giving anything away to point out that the memorial?s security measures?at least the visible measures to which visitors are subjected?will not prevent a well-planned attack. Many of the most onerous requirements, even if they were effective deterrents, are unevenly enforced. For example, the requirement to provide names, addresses, et cetera in advance is undermined by the occasional distribution of a few same-day, timed tickets at several downtown locations and by the controversial ticket allocations to tour operators. (If an additional goal of named, prebooked tickets is to prevent reselling and control capacity, then the memorial could simply get rid of all tickets and count visitors as they enter and exit.) Then there?s the photo-ID rule, without which the requirement to give your name is meaningless. It?s at once overly restrictive?how many 13-year-olds have photo ID??and largely unenforced (my ID was requested on only the first of my three visits). ?

I talked to Bruce Schneier, a leading thinker on security and the man who coined the term ?security theater? to describe measures that are visible or intrusive but also pointless or ineffective. Schneier responded to a description of the memorial?s visible security with a pointed question: Is the memorial to the victims?or to our collective stupidity? The tactics, Schneier said, ?assume we can guess the plot. But as long as the terrorists can avoid them by making a minor change in their tactics or target, they're wastes of money.? What isn?t a waste of money? ?Investigation, intelligence, and emergency response?stuff that doesn?t require you to guess the plot.??

Real Estate Weekly ? Blog Archive ? City reaches agreement for ...

Rendering of new medical facilities at 525 East 73rd Street

By Al Barbarino

The city reached an agreement with Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and the City University of New York today for the construction of two new state-of-the-art science and medical facilities on Manhattan?s Upper East Side.

The city will sell a 66,000 s/f site at 525 East 73rd Street for $215 million, what Mayor Bloomberg called ?easily one of the largest real estate transactions the city has ever been involved in? during a live press conference.

MSKCC will cover roughly 70 percent of the asking price and CUNY will pay the rest, said a spokesperson for the New York City Economic Development, which negotiated the agreement.

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center will construct an up to 750,000 s/f cancer care facility and CUNY Hunter College will build an up to 336,000 s/f Science and Health Professions building to upgrade its science and nursing facilities.

?Thanks to our innovative approach to economic development, today?s announcement is yet another step towards making New York City home to the world?s most talented workforce,? Bloomberg said. ?Not only will these two great institutions play a critical role in creating great jobs in one of the city?s growing industries, but they usher in the innovators and medical advancements of tomorrow.?

A Newmark Grubb Knight Frank team made up of Mark S. Weiss, Justin DiMare and Howard Kesseler?represented Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the purchase and identified a replacement site for a Department of Sanitation garage that was originally planned for the site.

?In doing so, we were able to arrange the acquisition of the 73rd?Street site, which is large enough for MSKCC to expand its New York City footprint and for CUNY to develop the Hunter College Science and Health Professions Building, advancing both institution?s important roles in New York City,? Weiss said.

The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center will be well-positioned near the hospital?s main campus at 1275 York Ave. and will provide outpatient treatment programs for patients with lung, head, neck and hematological cancers and will include state-of-the-art outpatient bone marrow transplantation services.

?This new facility will play a critically important role in our overall cancer care delivery system,? said Dr. Craig B. Thompson, president and CEO of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, in a statement. ?It will have a patient-oriented physical design ? equipped with almost everything patients will need under one roof ? making their experience as streamlined and easy as possible.?

The site will also enable CUNY Hunter to create consolidated science and nursing facilities, eliminating the need for duplicate eating halls, libraries and other facilities at the current 25th Street campus, which will ultimately be vacated, the school?s president said.

?The relationship between Hunter College and Memorial Sloan-Kettering underscores Mayor Bloomberg?s unwavering support for STEM and for public education, and highlights the great importance of public and private collaborations,? said Jennifer J. Raab, president of CUNY Hunter College. ?We are proud of the many contributions Hunter College is making to science and will continue to make, expanding its work in neuroscience and cancer research, as we train the next generation of scientists, particularly minorities and women, in conjunction with Memorial Sloan-Kettering.?

The project is expected to create more than 3,200 construction jobs and nearly 830 permanent jobs, according to an analysis conducted by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, capitalizing on considerable growth that?s occurring in science, technology and research fields in New York.

Currently there are nearly 400 venture capital firms investing over $560 million in healthcare and biomedical innovation in the city and almost 100 companies based in the biotech, medical device, and biomedical IT industries, according to data from Mayor Bloomberg?s office.

Obama's Weekly Address: Commemorating the 11th Anniversary of 9/11

As the nation prepares to mark the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, President Obama is reflecting on "just how far we've come as a nation" and highlighting his administration's foreign policy successes.

In his weekly address, the president paid tribute to those who lost their lives and honored the first responders who fought to save them.

"On that clear September morning, as America watched the towers fall, and the Pentagon burn and the wreckage smoldering in a Pennsylvania field, we were filled with questions. Where had the attacks come from, and how would America respond? Would they fundamentally weaken the country we love? Would they change who we are?" Obama said.

"The last decade has been a difficult one," he said. "But together, we have answered those questions and come back stronger as a nation."

Echoing his remarks at the Democratic National Convention this week, Obama said al Qaeda is "on the path to defeat," and, "Osama bin Laden will never threaten America again" because of his leadership.

The president also touted the end of the Iraq war and the transition in Afghanistan.

"Instead of changing who we are, the attacks have brought out the best in the American people," he said. "Instead of turning on each other, we've resisted the temptation to give in to mistrust and suspicion. I have always said that America is at war with al Qaeda and its affiliates - and we will never be at war with Islam or any other religion. We are the United States of America. Our freedom and diversity make us unique, and they will always be central to who we are as a nation.

"Eleven years later, that's the legacy of 9/11 - the ability to say with confidence that no adversary and no act of terrorism can change who we are," he said. "We are Americans, and we will protect and preserve this country we love. On this solemn anniversary, let's remember those we lost, let us reaffirm the values they stood for, and let us keep moving forward as one nation and one people."

The president will mark the upcoming anniversary by attending a memorial service at the Pentagon and meeting with wounded service members at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md.
